Description of the problemReference nhtsa action number: pe12001. I purchased this vehicle used in december 2012. One day after filling up with fuel i parked the car in my garage. The next day i came out to my garage and there was a strong smell of gasoline. When i got inside of my car the smell got much stronger and it was unbearable. I could not find any leaks inside or outside of the vehicle. I had to drive to work and this was the only car available. This was in the dead of winter and i had to drive with the windows down because the gas smell and fumes were unbearable. I had a terrible headache for the rest of the day. I left my car with the windows rolled down to help air it out. When i returned home i did some research online and found out this is a far too common problem with the w211 chassis mercedes benz. Per the information online i was instructed to remove my rear passenger seat and check the fuel sending units underneath the seats. Sure enough when i removed the cover off the drivers side fuel sending unit there was a pool of gasoline! I cleaned up all of the gasoline and let it dry out. From this point on i have not filled up my gas tank more than 3/4 just to keep this from happening again. Fuel pooling inside of the cabin is dangerous and unhealthy. Mercedes benz denies that this is a problem and will not cover the cost of replacing/fixing the defective fuel sending units. There are hundreds if not thousands of others that have this issue. Please do something to get this resolved. I have pictures of the fuel pooling inside of the cabin.
